External focalization is when the action is seen from outside, it is not used in fantastic.įor example in Henry James’ The Turn of the Screw (1898), there is an introduction, a frame-story that introduces the main story : a governess in Victorian England has to take care of Miles and Flora. If the narrator is omniscient, there is no suspense and no fantastic because there is no room for doubt. In third-person narratives, we perceive what the character perceives, as well as his thoughts (internal focalization). There is an interrogation of the reader when the character is not sure whether something happened or not, and how to interpret it. On the other hand, it makes the story more real and true because it is reinforced by different witnesses and different points of view.Īccording to Todorov, the best strategy is the first-person narrative (using the personal pronoun “I”) as it is the best way to present a fantastic story for we identify with the character. When you see the story through different angles, you suspend your disbelief and take distanciation. Then, there is Lucy, a friend and vampire, and Dr Van Helsing, who kills vampires. The second character is Mina Harker, Jonathan’s wife, with whom Dracula fell in love. The first of these journals is by Jonathan Harker, who went to Transylvania. Cognitive estrangement in fiction involves using a person’s ignorance or lack of knowledge to promote suspension of disbelief.įor example, in Dracula (1897) by Bram Stoker, the book is presented as fragments of several characters’ diaries. Suspension of disbelief often applies to fictional works of the action, comedy, fantasy, and horror genres. With multiple narratives, we obtain what Samuel Taylor Coleridge called a “willing suspension of disbelief” through verisimilitude, suggesting that if a writer could infuse a “human interest and a semblance of truth” into a fantastic tale, the reader would suspend judgment concerning the implausibility of the narrative. Again the Fantastic is found in this hesitation – once it is decided the Fantastic ends. The Fantastic can also represent dreams and wakefulness where the character or reader hesitates as to what is reality or what is a dream. ![]() Tzvetan Todorov, The Fantastic: A Structural Approach to a Literary Genre Third, the reader must adopt a certain attitude with regard to the text: he will reject allegorical as well as “poetic” interpretations. Second, this hesitation may also be experienced by a character thus the reader’s role is so to speak entrusted to a character, and at the same time the hesitation is represented, it becomes one of the themes of the work - in the case of naive reading, the actual reader identifies himself with the character. The fantastic requires the fulfillment of three conditions.įirst, the text must oblige the reader to consider the world of the characters as a world of living persons and to hesitate between a natural or supernatural explanation of the events described. Simple: We use EventSentry‘s application scheduler to run diskpart.exe on a regular basis (and since the tool doesn’t stress the system it can be run as often as every minute) and generate an alert. Since we’re interested as to whether a particular RAID-enabled logical drive is “Healthy”, we’ll be looking at logical drives. With a few small steps we’ll be able to log an event to the event log when a drive in a software RAID fails, and send an alert via email or other notification methods.ĭiskpart is pretty much the command-line interface to the Disk Management MMC snap-in, which allows you to everything the MMC snap-in does – and much more! One of the things you can do with the tool is to review the status of all (logical) drives. What gives?Įven though a discussion on why that is (or is not) seems justified, I will focus on the solution instead.įortunately, there is a way to be notified when a RAID is “broken”, thanks in part to the diskpart.exe tool (which is part of Windows) and EventSentry. What’s peculiar is that this is a step back from Windows 2003, where RAID problems were actually logged to the System event log with the dmboot and dmio event sources. tray), and even WMI is silent as a grave. ![]() The event logs are quiet, there are no notifications (e.g. If the RAID is in a degraded state (usually because a hard disk is dead) then you will not know unless you navigate to the Disk Management view. Unfortunately, despite all the positive things about software RAID, there is a major pitfall on Windows 2008: The OS will not tell you when the RAID has failed. Better monitoring capabilities (though this article will alleviate this somewhat)īut despite being far from perfect, software RAIDs do have their time and place.More RAID levels than most software RAIDs.Faster performance due to dedicated hardware, including cache.Since this article is starting to sound like a software raid promotion, and for the sake of completeness, I am listing SOME of the advantages of a hardware RAID here as well: Windows Server lets you do all this, and it’s included with the OS – so why not take advantage of it? The last point is often overlooked I think – you can literally just add a hard disk to any non-redundant Windows server and create a mirror – with less than dozen clicks! When you need to add redundancy to a server without reinstalling the OS or restoring from backup. When you need to enable redundancy on a server that wasn’t originally designed with redundancy in mind (as if that would ever happen!).When you are on a budget and don’t want to spend a few hundred $$ on a hardware RAID controller.Software RAIDs make sense in a variety of scenarios: Software RAIDs are not as powerful and fast as their hardware counterparts, but are nevertheless a good way to enable disk redundancy. If you are already using Windows Server 2008’s software RAID capabilities, and think that Windows will somehow notify you when a disk in an array fails, then you can skip to “Just say something!” below.Ĭreating a RAID can all be done from Disk Management view in the Computer Management console, without any scripting or command-line tools. Windows Server has long provided admins the ability to create a software RAID, enabling redundant disks without a (potentially expensive) hardware RAID controller. Common motivations include gaining an external stamp of approval for the business model, reducing execution risk, and pressure-testing the company’s valuation before approaching the broader investment community. The motivations to go public via a reverse merger with a SPAC are similar to those underlying the decision to onboard a supporting investor. These figures respresent a huge leap compared with 2019, when 53 SPACs publicly listed worldwide, collecting a total of $12.6 billion. The frenzy has continued in 2021: the first quarter saw 296 SPAC listings, with total proceeds of $95.5 billion. They are a hot topic in capital markets, for good reason: in 2020, new listings of SPACs rose to 299, with global proceeds of approximately $92.1 billion. SPACs are listed shell companies whose sole purpose is to merge with private companies and thereby take them public. (See “SPACs Versus Supporting Investors.”) The surge in activity was driven, in part, by new listings of special purpose acquisition companies (SPACs). The global proceeds were $227 billion, a 29% increase versus 2019 and the highest level since 2010. The IPO boom was especially evident in China and the US for much of the year, while Europe saw significant activity in the fourth quarter. In 2020, despite the COVID-19 pandemic, the number and proceeds of IPOs increased sharply across the globe. In a Booming Market, Issuers Gain Crucial Benefits However, an issuer must carefully select its supporting investor in order to ensure that each party fully realizes the potential rewards. Supporting investors, for their part, can benefit from early access, value realization via the stock market, and strategic flexibility.īCG’s analysis shows that these benefits are tangible and empirically verifiable. Their presence as shareholders helps to mitigate the risks of an IPO by building other investors’ confidence in the issuer, boosting the IPO valuation, and, ultimately, driving higher total shareholder return (TSR). The Childhood National Immunization Survey, conducted by Statistics Canada every two years, is currently underway - and those numbers will indicate the extent to which the pandemic had an impact on routine vaccine uptake. School closures, limited resources and some public hesitancy to attend health appointments were primary factors. School-based programs were reportedly the most negatively affected, the study said, drawing on interviews with public health leaders from 11 provinces and territories (representatives from New Brunswick and Yukon did not participate). In 2020, MacDonald and a team of researchers from universities across Canada conducted a pan-national study to determine how the pandemic had impacted routine vaccine programs. School programs negatively affected, study saysĪbout two months into the pandemic in 2020, the National Advisory Committee on Immunization (NACI) recommended that school-based vaccine programs, including those for teens, could be deferred until schools reopened.īut the on-and-off nature of in-person learning during the 2020-2021 school year - with some students learning virtually or in a hybrid format - meant that not everyone would be in school for a vaccine catch-up. Experts say that improving access to routine vaccines will make all the difference. Public health units are now hustling to catch them up - but there's still work to be done, with multiple provinces reporting insufficient vaccine uptake. (Submitted by Chantell Plunkett)īetween school-closures, personnel shortages and public health units stretched thin, Canadian children and teenagers are lagging behind on routine shots that prevent various cancers and sexually transmitted diseases. They "haven't really finished off their series with us," Plunkett said.īrampton-based nurse Chantell Plunkett says that the Peel region is behind in catching kids up on vaccines against HPV, hepatitis B and meningococcal disease. In Ontario's Peel region, where Plunkett is a clinic supervisor for public health, those who missed scheduled shots in Grade 7 have now gone on to high school. Then, the pandemic hit - and with schools shut down, in-school vaccination programs were suspended across the country, leaving many kids to fall behind on their scheduled immunizations. Since 2017, Chantell Plunkett has worked on in-school vaccination programs in Brampton, Ont., immunizing kids against preventable illnesses like HPV, hepatitis B and meningococcal disease. They focus on whether or not that country has a functioning free-market economy, if the country's institutions are fit to uphold European values such as human rights and the EU's interpretation of the rule of law and whether the country has a functioning, inclusive democracy. The Copenhagen Criteria is a fairly opaque trio of requirements that the EU must be satisfied a candidate state has met in order to enter the proper accession negotiations.
